American Idol

American Idol on Fox
Fox's hit reality show! American Idol has topped television ratings since last summer when Texas native, Kelly Clarkson, won as the first Idol. With Ryan Seacrest once again as host (without his partner from last season Brian Dunkleman), this past season all three previous American Idol judges returned to audition potential Idol contestants across the nation. The judges' personalities combined-- Randy Jackson with his signature "You did your thing, dawg", Paula Abdul with her odd metaphorical praises and Simon Cowell with his straightforward criticism and sometimes, downright nasty comments-- became one of the show's highlights. Seeing some of the talentless hacks ham it up in the auditions for the judges and for national television was one of the others.

After scouring the nation for talent this season, the contestants were then dwindled to 32 semifinalists. From the 32 semi-finalists, twelve were chosen to move on to the finalists' round.

Who did America choose as their American Idol? Who won the recording contract and opportunity of a lifetime? Who succeeded Kelly Clarkson? Who succeeded Justin Guarini as runner-up? Was it Carmen, Charles, Clay, Corey, Joshua, Julia, Kimberly C., Kimberly L., Rickey, Ruben, Trenyce, or Vanessa?

After long, arduous weeks of competition, only three were left. Would it be Clay, Ruben or Kimberly L.? The competition was tough and the votes were close. Then Kimberly L. was eliminated.

And then there were two. Who would it be? Mr. "205" Birmingham or Raleigh, NC native Clay Aiken? Would it be the Velvet Teddy Bear himself Ruben Studdard with his sultry voice perfectly suited for R&B ballads or the dork-turned-handsome Clay? No one could tell.

After a three-day finale with each contestant singing three songs, all the phone votes were tabulated. Did Ruben Studdard's rendition of the Beatles classic sweeps America's heart? Did Clay win over America with his breathtaking version of "Bridge Over Troubled Waters?" It was the moment of truth.

By only a margin of almost a hundred thousand out of millions of votes, Ryan Seacrest announced the 2003 American Idol winner. In the end, Ruben Studdard was announced as America's Idol leaving runner-up to Clay Aiken.

Since American Idol, both have released singles. Last year's winner, Kelly Clarkson's CD "Thankful" has also been topping charts and her single "Miss Independent" has enjoyed success on the Billboard 100. American Idol's runner-up from last year, Justin Guarini, has also released a CD.
